The Big Apple Routine, performed by Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers and choreographed by Frankie Manning, is one of the all time great jazz dance group dances. Most of the time it’s taught in a short time, making it difficult for dancers to pick up quickly enough to feel comfortable joining in on the dance floor. So, international swing dance instructor and historian BOBBY WHITE and renowned Big Apple instructor AKEMI KINUKAWA wanted to make sure to give you enough time to really nail it.
We also want to make sure you have plenty of practice, so we’re throwing in asocial dance with plenty of Big Apples!
SATURDAY SCHEDULE
- 1:30-3:00pm – THE CIRCLE: We’ll begin with an intensive breakdown of the first half of the routine, the circle.
- 3:30-5:00pm – THE LINE: A.k.a. the part most people forget. We are giving this section its own class for those who want to nail it.
SUNDAY SCHEDULE
- 3:00-5:00pm – THE STYLING: Now that you know the Big Apple, end the weekend with a deep dive into the beautiful and individual Big Apple styling of Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers for some inspiration.
- 5:00-7:00pm – THE DANCE: We’ll have a two hour social dance with great swing music for Lindy Hop, PLUS a Big Apple roughly every thirty minutes, so you have a chance to do it a lot in combat conditions.
